Wading into Controversial Waters..

..with this one, but none-the-less, here's a link to:

10 Reasons the Pill Sucks, by Bad Catholic.

I am a protestant who does not believe in the use of birth control, and I love love love to get the (I guess you might say 'original') Catholic perspective.

Also, this is my favourite bit of speaking/writing (there's a transcript as well as audio) about contraceptives from a Catholic source EVER.

Contraception: Why Not? by Janet Smith.

The audio links are right at the top but the rest of the page is the transcript. The only deviation in my beliefs from her's are that toward the end as she explains NFP, I do not agree that it is necessarily appropriate for constant contraceptive use.

Actually, as far as I can tell from reading the Catholic Catechism and the Humanae Vitae (correct me if I'm wrong), the Catholic church condones the use of NFP for contraception in the gravest of circumstances (mother's health, extremely poor finances etc.) not for general use to avoid children.

My reasons for not being comfortable with constant NFP use for Christian couples is:
A. It's unbiblical, as per 1 Corinthians 7:4-5:

The wife hath not power of her own body, but the husband: and likewise also the husband hath not power of his own body, but the wife.

Defraud ye not one the other, except it be with consent for a time, that ye may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again, that Satan tempt you not for your incontinency.

and B. It is against God's design for a couple to abstain from sex when a woman is ovulating. It is also unhealthy for a woman in her fertile years to have long periods of infertility.

As Christians, we know that the best place to live is within God's design and deviating from that does have consequences. Certainly I think it is wise not to do so without strong reasons.

  1. Thank you for wading into these controversial waters! I know that it is difficult but it is something many woman need to hear. Would you happen to have any resources about the unhealthiness of woman to be infertile during her infertile years? Where did you hear that? I think it would be very interesting to share that with others I know.
    Thank you for sharing!

  3. So does this mean you are going to keep having children until you reach menopause? Just curious, I don't mean that to be spiteful. That's just something I have thought about...

    1. I don't mind questions asked out of curiosity at all!

It is my dearest wish that I will have the faith and ability to bear children right up until I am no longer fertile.
Choosing to walk in such radical (at least, it's radical in this day and age) obedience to God's will however, is a path I imagine that will test our faith many times. I hope we will prevail and trust in Him from whom all blessings (especially the cute little velvety-skinned ones ;) ) flow.
